Utthan, a grassroots organization founded in 1981 in Gujarat, works with women and marginalized communities across the country. Rooted in principles of equity and justice, we work to strengthen local leadership, expand access to rights and resources, and promote inclusive rural development. With a focus on water, livelihoods, gender equity, and natural resource management, we co-create solutions that are locally grounded and systemically relevant.

Our Story
Utthan’s journey began in 1981, when four women stepped into Gujarat’s Bhal region to support marginalized communities in organising around livelihood challenges and building local leadership. This gave rise to Mahiti in 1994. Since then, Utthan has partnered with communities, government, and civil society to co-create inclusive, sustainable solutions in water, livelihoods, gender equity, and natural resource governance—grounded in lived realities and a shared vision of dignity and justice.
Our Mission
To empower women and young girls by providing them with the perspectives, resources, and tools they need to raise their voices, access and control productive resources and services, and make decisions about their own lives and bodies.
Philosophy of change
Utthan believes sustainable development must be people-led. We focus on building agency—especially among women—to enable communities to shape their own futures. Our gender-responsive approach places women’s leadership at the core of local problem-solving. By linking women’s empowerment with community well-being, we promote inclusive, climate-resilient rural development rooted in environmental sustainability. Through collaboration with government, experts, and networks, we co-create context-driven solutions with the potential for systemic impact.

MEDICAL
This livelihood mission is in strong alignment with the Government of India’s ‘Skill India’ initiative. This initiative aims to skill underprivileged youth from urban slums in the 18-32 years age bracket and is operational through 81 centres across 18 cities in 16 states.
Your contribution will help support in:
- Providing training on computer application, digital marketing, patient care/bedside assistance, banking services, E-Logistics and supply chain management & business process outsourcing
- Training on soft skills for personality development
- Ensuring placements of all the trained beneficiaries
- Providing practical exposure through project counseling and employee engagement apart from the curriculum
- Use of modern and relevant means of training i.e. use of latest digital technology for sessions
We have trained over 65,000 youth & more than 45,000 of them have been placed in over 350 brands across India with your support!
- When Covid-19 struck the nation in 2020, it not only took away lives, but it also took away livelihoods, schooling and employment opportunities for millions of people.
- Data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy indicates that over 10 million people lost their jobs just in the second wave of Covid-19.
- As many as 97% households have experienced a decline in income since the pandemic began last year.
- India is facing a dual challenge in the form of a large unemployed youth population and a desperate need for more Covid Warriors in the health sector. Similarly there was a rising need for a digitally savvy generation to help us cope with the ‘new normal’
